Summary of Unit

Students will begin and finish J.D. Salinger's Franny and Zooey and will complete a series of Type-2-technology-based assignments which lead up to an ultimate expression of a thorough understanding of the content. Students will establish two or more themes and determine importance of the thematic content based on relation to real-life experiences, which will be heavily focused on. Students will come away with an ultimate understanding of writing style and its effectiveness, advanced philosophical concepts, and real-life application of a writer's basest points.

Establish Goals

Content Area: English
Grade Level: 11-12
Domain: Reading - Literature
Cluster: Key Idea and Details
Standards: 2. Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide and objective summary of the text.

Students will understand that

•There are two major textual themes in the novel
•The two major themes evolve to create the integral elements of the story
•The focal themes in a novel define the text by its end

Essential Questions

•How do Franny's and Zooey's relationships with Seymour differ?
•How do their respective relationships create their major differences and subsequent conflict?
•Why do Franny's and Zooey's differences serve as conflict and resolution, and are their differences the defining aspects of the novel? (What are the novel's intentions?)

Students will know

•Terminology
Franny and Zooey are, at times, examples of
fatalism, existentialism, and absurdism.
•Critical Details
Seymour's death and views have defined
Franny and Zooey.
•Sequence and Timelines
Franny grows up for her realizations. Zooey
exhibits love and caring. Both change for the
better over time.

Students will be able to

•Express how the themes define the novel.
•Make sense of how themes are developing.
•Decide what the two major themes are.
•Contrast the two major themes and their importance.
•Relate the integral elements of the story to their own
experiences.
•Realize that as a text is defined, we are left with the
author's intentions, which are likely important to consider
in life.

Performance Task Overview
Writers will take on the role of hopeful writers of literary analyses and attempt to submit a thematic anaylsis of Franny and Zooey to the national publisher, Columbia Journal of Literary Criticism. They will create a cogent, coherent essay-form analysis in EBook format that is universally downloadable and designed. Ultimately, they will
orally present their Ebook analyses after having posted them to a class Google Doc., allowing the audience to have readied questions for each presentation ahead of time.

Expectations

Absences: Attendance is crucial in the class. Missing a day of class means missing an integral aspect of the unit at hand, and must be made up in some capacity. Work is expected to be turned in digitally, regardless of absence, barring extenuating circumstances which must be worked out ahead of time. We will establish a system of 'buddies' to compensate for absences in class.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism is entirely unacceptable, and will be dealt with in accordance with the school's policy. Copyright infringement can be simpler than we know, so be careful to cite everything used from another source appropriately. If you have any question or concern regarding plagiarism, fair use, or copyright, then please feel free to ask me.

Assignments:
As is listed below, each assignment is major, and will comprise a large part of your grade. It is important that each assignment is turned in. If, for some reason, an assignment, simply, cannot be turned in on the required date, please see me ahead of time to let me know, and I will happy to work with you. Late assignments will be addressed so that we can work together to establish a solution that works, they will not be forgotten about.

Classroom Expectations:
The expectations for the classroom should be relative common sense. You are all adults, and I will respect you, as such, provided I receive the same degree of respect. You are expected to be attentive, courteous, helpful, and consistently respectful to myself, yourself, and your peers. The classroom is an environment intended to be conducive to learning. If I am doing something counter-conducive to learning, or you could better learn in a manner which I am not presently offering, then please don't hesitate to let me know!

Benchmarks (Total of 1,000 Points)

• (50 Points) Create a blog about the major themes of the novel and their effects on it. The blog should be comprehensive, consist of as many posts as is deemed necessary on an individual basis, and should be creatively approached. The blogs will be completely designed by the student, from aesthetics to content, and should reflect individuality on a multitude of levels. Blog posts need not be any specific length, but should directly address the content for the duration of any such post.
• (50 Points) Create a LifeTrack/Timeline of the development of themes in the story over time. The LifeTrack/Timeline should closely, and very specifically, address the appropriate content, and should be extensive and supportive to whatever the ultimate point is that is attempting to be made. The LifeTrack/Timeline does not need to be any specific length, but should clearly and comprehensively cover the material from the book up until the point that has been read at that time.
• (100 Points) Create an online, digital diagram which contrasts two major themes and their importance. The digital diagram can be created using a number of online resources, but is ultimately up to individual choice and discretion. The diagram should be visually appealing and representative of creativity, individuality, and the personality of its creator. It is to cover content as wholly as the previous assignments, and must be carefully formatted and/or presented in order to optimize viewing ability of the audience.
• (100 Points) Create a Prezi to expound on thematic concepts. Pay the most attention to the theme which appears to be most important. The Prezi is expected to be heavily detailed and comprehensive. This is a medium which allows for a number of approaches, with the option of using a number of different media. Go about addressing the presentation creatively, and using as many media as are possible for the content. Make sure that it is both creative and content-oriented.
• (100 Points) Create a Tumblr page to document and relate (in a journal style) personal relationships to the content. Tumblr has a number of amazing options for visual optimization, creativity, and really making it one's own. Take advantage of these options and be sure to address the portion of the project with a heavy amount of creativity. The written entries on the Tumblr should be addressed with a similar amount of creativity, and are to be written from a journal-style, personal perspective. The content, too, is relatively personal and, should you be uncomfortable with sharing the content therein with a wide audience, Tumblr has options for enabling privacy so that only I can see it. You will receive no deductions for privatizing the Tumblr page.
• (100 Points) Create a Google Doc. to share analysis piece with the entire audience. Allow for comments within the Google Doc. The Google Doc. is to be shared with the entire audience for the sake of feedback. After submitting the individual piece to the group Google Doc., please ready constructive comments or questions for the other pieces. Entries are to be thorough and are to be a good indication of what's to come in the final performance product.

• (500 Points) Final Performance Product. The final performance product for the assignment is to create an EBook of the revised content from the Google Doc. assignment. The EBook is expected to an extensive, heavily proofread and edited, professionally-voiced piece which is prepared for professional consideration. EBooks are to be publicly accessible from any major operating system so that, upon completion, they may be submitted to the Columbia Journal of Literary Criticism for consideration as a featured piece in the annual publication.
